HAMBURG EIMSBÜTLER BC - A BRIEF HISTORY

The club was founded in 1911 as SC Eibe. They merged three times over their first decade, settling upon something close to their current form in 1921 with Hamburg-Eimsbütteler BC. After the Second World War, they mostly played in the second division of the Fußball-Bezirksklasse Groß-Hamburg. The club played in the 1. Klasse Hamburg from 1945 to 1947, which was the second tier of West German football. They were relegated in 1949 and had dropped down to the fourth tier by 1951. The club returned to the third tier from 1954 to 1957, then reached the second division until demotion in 1960. With the creation of the Bundesliga in 1963, they remained in the third tier. The 1990s and 2000s were a struggle, with the club a sixth-tier mainstay, and although they dropped to the seventh tier in 2011, they have fought their way back to the fifth tier, Oberliga Hamburg.

The club's main rival is Altona 93, with matches between the clubs being considered a derby. HEBC won the 2025–26 Hamburg Cup to qualify for the 2026–27 DFB-Pokal, its first-ever appearance in the competition. It hosted Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund in the first round at the Volksparkstadion and set a Pokal attendance record for a match involving a fifth-tier side. They would lose 5-0, but put in a respectable performance against one of Germany's top clubs. The borough of Eimsbüttel is much-loved for its family-friendly neighbourhoods, green spaces and lively areas with bars, restaurants and shops.It has a population of 260,000. With its historic residential buildings and tree-lined streets, the eponymous Eimsbüttel quarter is one of Hamburg’s most sought-after neighbourhoods. At its heart is the Osterstrasse shopping street, which is also the location of the yearly Osterstrasse festival. Foodies will have their taste buds satisfied at the many restaurants, wine and cocktail bars, and delicatessen shops around Eppendorfer Weg.

MY VISIT

From my game at SC Victoria, it was a few minutes' walk and five minutes wait before I got bus 5 to Dammtor. After another few minutes' walk it was four minutes wait for the S7 to Nettlenburg. I was back at my room just after 10 and got one blog up before having an early night.   I had a reasonable night's sleep before getting my other two blogs up. My stomach was still not in good shape, but appeared to be getting better. After a rest in the room, I left at 9.30, getting the S7 to Berliner Tor and the U2 to Emilienstrasse. It was then under ten minutes to the ground. Entry was the most expensive of the trip so far at €8, and I wasn't allowed to take my drink in. I suspect that l'd be needing to visit a cash machine again before the day was out.

HEBC were 16th in the table with six points from seven games whilst Victoria sat 5th with 11 points. It was a pretty dull game, but Tjorven Bastian Dan Kohler opened the scoring on 18 minutes for HEBC, putting home a square ball. Victoria equalised on 30 minutes, but I was in the toilet. That said, when I returned, the scoreboard still showed 1-0. HEBC made it 2-1 on 50 minutes, with Kohler getting his second with a good low strike from the edge of the area. There was a heavy spell of Victoria pressure before they equalised on 77 minutes, a header following a succession of corners. The rain had started to come down now, thankfully not too heavy. The visitors made it 3-2 on 86 minutes, a calm and composed finish by #14.

  

THE GROUND

REINMULLER PLATZ is a fairly standard venue for this level of German football. It has no cover, but a fair bit of terracing and some uncovered seats. There is a decent clubhouse attached, which serves Bratwurst and drinks. It's well linked by public transport, and parking is available.
