US CAROUGE FC - A BRIEF HISTORY
The club was established in 1928. They currently play in the 3. Liga Geneve Groupe 1 which sits at the seventh level of Swiss Football. As they are so low down, information was hard to come by but they play second fiddle in the area of Carouge to second-tier outfit Etoile Carouge and use the back pitch at their stadium. The municipality of Carouge is located in Geneva and has a population of around 25,000. It is a very diverse area with around 10% of the population originally coming from Portugal.
There is an outdoor Olympic swimming pool known as Piscine de la Fontenette and the indoor Piscine des Pervenches. Carouge has a museum, the Musée de Carouge, the cinema, Bio 72, which exclusively plays indie films; and a popular theatre, the Théâtre de Carouge-Atelier de Genève. Arve River, which borders Carouge from the northeast, has a walking and cycling path. Carouge also has a free bicycle rental station (Genève roule), at Place de l'Octroi.
MY VISIT
From my game at Olympique Genève, it was a walk across the road and a couple of minutes wait for the tram to Rive where I had a very tight change. All being well though, I'd miss very little of my third game of the day. Not for the first time, the platform I needed was missing due to misdirection from Google Maps. I tried jogging up to the next stop where there was not so much confusion. This worked although I was disappointed to be missing more of the game than intended. I arrived just over ten minutes into the game but Google Maps had directed me to the wrong side of the ground with the Futbology destination the centre spot. I was able to watch from outside with a reasonable view of the action.
Hosts US Carouge were in 7th place having won two and lost three of their games so far. Their last game, just over a week ago saw them win 1-0 at FC Plan-les-Ouates 2. FC Onex were the second-string side of FC Onex in the division above and played in a nearby region of Geneva around 6 km away. They were in 4th place having won three, drawn one and lost one of their games so far. Their last result was a 3-1 loss at home to FC Versoix. I later found out that US Carouge led 1-0 when I arrived. The game was not bad. Onex were the better side and they equalised on 40 minutes, heading home after a series of corners. They went ahead on 53 minutes Onex taking advantage from a free kick that was pretty close to being a penalty in terms of where it was from. They came close with another free kick but on 65 minutes, Carouge equalized on the break, a finish from a tight angle. In what had been the best game of my trip so far, they went ahead on 75 minutes in similar fashion to the first after an attack down the right. In what was a remarkable turnaround they went 4-2 up on 78 minutes, finishing from just inside the area. Another goal was disallowed for an infringement but by now, Onex looked beaten. There was not much action after that and no further goals.
THE GROUND
This is basically the back pitch of Etoile Carouge and some of the facilities are shared between the two clubs. On my visit, the bar was open and offered a decent range. The ground itself is pretty decent, one sided with the standard chunky steps that can double as seating or standing. Cover of sorts is provided by overhanging trees but these also block the view on some parts of the terrace.
