FC PLAN LES QUATES - A BRIEF HISTORY
As with many clubs at this level, information is quite hard to come by. They were established in 1930 and are a club that has many teams from youngsters to the first team. From the information that I have been able to find, they joined the fourth tier in 2008, playing in the 2. Liga interregional - Group 1. However, they finished bottom of the league, going down to the fifth tier. Due to reorganisation they currently play in the same league, albeit it has moved down a level. From the incomplete records I have, they do not appear to have troubled the top positions and their best finish in recent times was 9th in 2023. Plan-les-Ouates is a municipality of the canton of Geneva. The population of the area is just under 11,000.
MY VISIT
From my game at US Carouge the night before, I headed to a bar called La Taproom. With it not opening until 5pm and being closed on Sunday, this was my only chance of the weekend. With walking seeing me only arrive less than ten minutes later than public transport, I decided to walk and carry on listening to the Retrolists podcast. I was hoping it would be a bit nicer than some of the walks so far. It was indeed and I got some nice photos. My 0.5L glass of Farm Cider from StereoTaps was CHF11 or £9.85. With that being the only cider on offer, I was stopping at 1 but it was very nice. It was the usual palaver to find the platform for my first tram but the changeover was simple as it was a couple of minutes wait at the same stop.
I found that it was very much a similar situation to Poland, my favoured tipple of cider was readily available in supermarkets but harder to find in bars. There was also a huge price difference but in some cases, the quality of the product fully justified the cost. It had been a far more sensible Saturday than most drink wise but then I had filled my boots on Friday to balance things out. I got to sleep fairly late after being unable to sleep, probably getting around six hours of sleep. I awoke before my alarm went off at 9 am, getting up, having a shower and getting dressed. I still hadn't decided upon game three of the of the day, having a choice of two games. I left later than planned and had the usual issue of working out the correct stop. Thankfully, there were plenty of options, so I found something eventually. The 43 bus took me most of the way, albeit one stop too far. I was still there fifteen minutes before kickoff after a nice rural walk. The ground was nicely designed and set in a pleasant area. It had a double-backed stand, the other side hosting rugby and American football.
FC Plan-les-Quates were in 4th, having won three, drawn two and lost one of their games so far. CS Italien were in second, having won four, drawn one and lost one. There were a few tough tackles going in but it was the hosts that were slightly on top without carving out a real chance. They were undone by a quickfire CS Italien double, a low shot from the edge of the area on 27 minutes and another long-range looping effort on 31 minutes. Following a disputed foul, Italien took advantage whilst the Plan-les-Quates players were appealing to the referee, broke down the right and the striker slotted past the keeper unopposed to make it 3-0 on 40 minutes. The hosts looked for a way back into the game and hit the woodwork just before the hour mark. As they did CS Italien broke and made it 4-0, the substitute #13 chipping the ball over the keeper on 65 minutes. It was then 5-0 on 77 minutes, a confidence-stricken Plan-les-Quates putting up little resistance to the well-worked move.
THE GROUND
STADE DES CHERPINES is a stadium in a very pleasant area of Switzerland. The ground itself is nicely kept and has a double-backed stand which hosts rugby and American football on the other side. In the middle is a smart cafe serving a range of food and drinks. The wooden roof is of an attractive design. The standard concrete steps setup is present as with so many grounds over here it doubles as seating and standing. There is at least a lot of colour with the club logo painted on the steps. There's plenty of parking and the ground is easily accessible by public transport.
