OLYMPIQUE GENEVE FC - A BRIEF HISTORY
The club was established in 2013 according to the Roman numerals on their badge. They joined the fifth tier 2. Liga interregional - Gruppe 1 in 2018 winning the group and promotion to the fourth tier 1. Liga Gruppe 1 where they finished a best-ever 8th in 2020. However, relegation followed the following season. They have been in the fifth tier ever since and have finished 6th in each of their last two seasons.
MY VISIT
My previous game at Meyrin overran so I had to get a shift on to see as much of game two of the day as possible. I jogged to the tram stop I needed and managed to step straight onto a delayed tram that was a couple of minutes late. I watched some of the Wycombe Wanderers v Crawley Town game on my phone, we were leading 1-0 and managed to hold on, confirmation of the result coming later. The ride was around 15 minutes and with another jog at the other end I was able to get to the ground 13 minutes in with the score still 0-0. The noisy Chatel fans with their drum meant finding the ground was pretty simple. I had the choice of two games, on the back pitch, a Juniors B championship 2nd degree - autumn round - Group 2 game between Olympique Genève was going on. This game was 15 minutes further in and posed no interest to me.
Olympique de Genève FC were in 6th place having won three, drawn three and lost two of their games so far. Their last game was a 6-1 humbling at Romontois. Chatel St Denis were bottom of the table having won one, drawn three and lost four of their games so far. Their last game was a 3-1 loss at high-flying T.Sainte. This was one of the more distant games of my weekend as the visitors had travelled around 90 kilometres from the other side of Lake Geneva for the game. Just as with the other two games, the struggling visitors were the better side but it was goalless at the break. Chatel again had the better of the second half but it was petering out into a dull game. Olympique Genève had a couple of chances requiring good saves around the 70-minute mark. They continued to apply pressure and opened the scoring on 78 minutes when a striker got away from the defence, rounded the keeper and finished into an empty net. It was 2-0 on 82 minutes, a cross from the left was finished from close range.
THE GROUND
I didn't have much time to explore VAREMBE SPORTS CENTER but it was quite similar to the first ground of the day in terms of their being one elevated stand with the rest uncovered. This stand had an unfinished look to it by English standards with bare concrete steps acting as seating. It still offered a good view of the action though. There was a Cafe in the corner of the ground, selling what looked like a decent range of items.
