MAINZ FRAUEN - A BRIEF HISTORY
The club was only established in 2022 by way of a partnership with local amateur side TSV Schott Mainz. In their inaugural season, Mainz won the Regionalliga Südwest but fell to VfL Bochum with a 6–3 aggregate score in the 2. Bundesliga promotion play-off final. The club initially utilised TSV Schott Mainz' facilities, before moving to the Bruchwegstadion ahead of the 2024–25 season. On 18 May 2025, Mainz secured promotion to the 2. Bundesliga after winning the Regionalliga Südwest, having won all but two matches. The team shone in attack, with Nadine Anstatt becoming the league's top scorer with 33 goals.
MY VISIT
As ever, Futbology was a huge help in finding games. I had booked this trip around six weeks ago and had really hoped that I would be able to visit the team representing High Wycombe's twin town, Kelkheim. Even though I am a much better groundhopper than on my first visit to Frankfurt, I still make errors and oversights. All of Kelkheim's teams played on Sunday, that was unless I fancied watching U19 football at some bland municipal pitches. That didn't appeal in the slightest and so I would look elsewhere. The standout option was Mainz Frauen at their old ground, as it had an 11 am kickoff and allowed me to get two or three games in one day.
From my crazy 4-5 game at Bad Vilbel, I made my way back to Bad Vilbel South Station, where I had an eight-minute wait for my train back to Frankfurt. It had been a decent hopperfest at the game, which made identifying the bloke I had a good chat with difficult. I think I travelled the furthest, though, and it was well worthwhile. I was back at my room around 10.30, having some Apfelwein whilst doing my blog. I must have got to bed around midnight. I awoke naturally at 6 and went back to sleep for 90 minutes before getting up, having a shower and getting dressed. I was still full from last night's huge meal and so breakfast wasn't needed. I left at 9 and as I had time to kill, went and checked out where I'd have to get my Flixbus from tomorrow morning. At least I would have, if it wasn't bucketing it down. There was also an issue with my train as the RMV app told me the wrong platform. Google Maps identified the correct one, but it meant that I was setting off half an hour later than intended. I was glad to have built in an allowance for stuff going wrong. It was a pleasant 20-minute walk to the ground, where it was a well-priced €10 for entry. There were Swindon and AFC Bournemouth fans amongst the check-ins on Futbology.
Mainz were 7th, having won one, drawn one and lost one of their games so far. In their last game, they had drawn 1-1 at Viktoria. Eintracht Frankfurt II were the reserve side of their main team, which played in the top league. They sat in 10th place. They had drawn all three of their games, last time a goalless draw at Meppen. The game was quiet at first, but Mainz opened the scoring on 13 minutes when Emma Junold capitalised on a mix-up between the two Eintracht defenders and was left with a simple finish into the bottom right-hand corner. Mainz continued to dominate and they doubled their lead on 45 minutes when Chiara Bouziane chased down a goalkeeper clearance and calmly slotted the ball into the net. Eintracht had a good spell and hit the bar with a curling shot. But Mainz made it 3-0 on 51 minutes, Bouziane waltzing through the visitors' defence and finishing from close range. Frankfurt had a chance to get a goal back in the final few minutes but they blasted over from around six yards out.
THE GROUND
BRUCHWEG STADION is the old stadium of Mainz 05 and is used for their women's and youth games. It is now three-sided with one end allocated to the Wolfgang Frank Campus. There is a terrace behind the goal and a stand opposite with a terrace in the lower tier and seats in the top. The one stand that was open is all seated and has padded seating which is comfortable, offers good views and a capacity of around 3,500. Food and drink are available in the form of pretzels, hot dogs, beer and soft drinks.
