ST DAY FC - A BRIEF HISTORY

The club was established in 1949. They were long-time Falmouth & Helston League members, where they were champions in 2006. That led to them joining the Cornwall Combination where they were runners-up to Illogan RBL in 2013. In 2019, they became founder members of the St Piran League, joining the Premier West Division. Last season they won the title, remaining unbeaten all season. This earned them promotion to the South West Peninsula League where they play in the West Division. The village of St Day has a population of just under 4,500, It has a history in copper mining and one mine site has been used for short-oval stock car racing for many years. Stock car drivers from Cornwall have won eleven World Championships.

I was really looking forward to the South West Peninsula Hop. It was a part of the country that I rarely visit, although I had been on a couple of day trips so far this season with Thatcham Town. There were only a couple of drawbacks. The hotels were extremely pricey - I had paid £89 and £93 a night and they were the cheapest I could find. Fellow hopper Dan had the right idea, booking in August and getting a decent price. I'd gone for it in mid-January but even three months in advance, it was a fair amount. The other was having to drive, another expensive one in car costs and some of the roads last year were not the best. The only saving grace was having Colin on board to split the costs. I still prefer to relax as a passenger on hops, though, but it couldn't be helped.
From our game at Sturminster Newton, we walked the 15 minutes back to our hotel. I did consider a pub down by the river, but with no guarantee of a decent cider and two nice bottles back at my room, I decided against it. There had been some big crowds at games, 1,854 on the Hop game at Newquay was claimed, although that looked a tad optimistic. Ours was a bumper 323; no doubt they took advantage of Cornwall-bound hoppers who wanted to break their journey. We were back at the hotel by 10 and I got my blog up and finished the cider I'd purchased earlier. I was asleep at midnight but awoke after four hours due to my body clock being used to work. I got up when my alarm went off at 6.40, has a shower and got dressed. We left at 7.50, a slow start due to a lorry blocking the road. It was a very wet journey as rain, bile, and spite poured down from the sky. News from St Day was mixed, but thanks to hard work from the volunteers, it was on. I was there at 11, directed to the field for parking, which was not the best in wet weather. Colin rushed off like a child and ended up leaving his phone in the car. I was in 20 minutes before kickoff, a friendly welcome and an excellent creme egg brownie from a superb cake stall. Later, I got a Marshmallow Brownie. The only downer was the poor mobile signal, but I met up with several familiar faces.

St Day were in 13th, having won seven, drawn five and lost seventeen of their games so far. They were in mixed form but had beaten Millbrook 3-0 in their last game. Penzance were 4th and had won thirteen, drawn ten and lost six so far. They'd not won in three games, losing 2-0 to Newquay last time out. It was an even opening, but St Day took the lead on 15 minutes with a great long-range lob. It was 2-0 after 22 minutes, the close-range shot initially cleared off the line, but it was rightfully adjudged to have gone over by the linesman. It was 3-0 on the half hour, the striker waltzed in unchallenged and slotted a low shot in from just inside the area. On 62 minutes, Penzance pulled one back, a shot on the turn into the top right corner.

THE GROUND

VOGUE PARK is an excellent venue in pleasant green surroundings. The club did everything in its power to make it a good day. The main stand holds around 100 seated, and covered standing is incorporated into the clubhouse. The rest of the ground is open to the elements. The clubhouse itself has a bar and there is a BBQ outside. There is also a good range of merchandise and plenty of parking. Star of the show though was due to the fundraising for the kids team. A superb cake stall with brilliant bakes at bargain prices and there was also a table with books and old programmes. Everyone was very friendly too and it was a great place to visit.
