SPARTA ZABRZE - A BRIEF HISTORY

The club can trace its roots back to 1906 although the current club was officially established in 1949. In 1964, after merging with  Ludwik Mikulczyce and  Concordia Zabrze, it changed its name to  Międzyzakładowy Górniczy Klub Sportowy Mikulczyce  (MGKS Mikulczyce). In 1973, after reuniting with other football teams (including  Górnik Rokitnica and Górnik Biskupice ), a joint football team was established under the name  Sparta Zabrze. After three runners-up spots, they won promotion to the 2nd tier in 1972.  They spent four seasons here before being relegated to the third tier where they stayed until 1985 when they went down to the district leagues.

MY VISIT

This day had plenty of changes made to it since I initially planned it. The only game set in stone was the Gornik Zabze game in the evening but the two before it was constantly changing. For a long time, game number one was going to be at Polonia Bytom and the club were helpful should I need to obtain a ticket. That was at 12 and the second game was due to be at Piast Gliwice II but when the latter got moved, I had a rethink, knowing that I'd likely have a bag to lug around. It made sense to stay around Katowice where my coach arrived and so I selected Sparta Katowice and Podlienska Katowice as a pairing, they had only been added a week or so before the game. This showed the limitations of the otherwise excellent Futbology app, as well as the fact that they didn't cover all of the district leagues in Poland which have some hidden gems. A helpful Polish fan pointed this out called Zas Tavka on Twitter who found me a couple of gems - firstly at Slavia Ruda Slaska and then here at Sparta Zabrze.

From my second game, it was a 90-minute walk to this game. I got to see plenty of the rural side of Poland and there seems to be a lot of that in this area. The first part of my journey was through some woods, very pleasant and peaceful. Mid-trip, we went past a couple of supermarkets and amongst other things I got a pizza slice, snacks, a couple of Polish fruit beers and a Polish Perry. All went down nicely and split the walk up. In the end on this day, I walked around 15 miles, all in. Entry was free and I saw nothing on sale. The game was being played in the Klasa Okręgowa  Grupa: Sląska I (Bytom-Zabrze), one of several leagues at the sixth tier of Polish Football.
Spartak Zabrze were in 11th place post-match but before the game, they had won one and lost three of their previous games. Last time out, they lost 2-0 at home to Burza Borowa. Unia Strzybnica were in 6th post game, prior to the game they had won three, drawn one and lost one. Last time out, they'd drawn 2-2 at Gwiazda Chudów. The game was probably the least entertaining so far, but it wasn't bad by any means. The hosts were the better side in the first half, forcing two good saves from the visiting keeper leading into the halftime period. On 67 minutes Unia Strzybnica took the lead through a free kick. But Sparta almost immediately equalised, a sweeping move catching the visitors off guard on the break.

THE GROUND

STADION MOSIR W ZABRZU is a classic old ground with sweeping curved terracing holding 13,000. There is also seating for 100 officially but it looks more. The ground is full of character but is looking a bit worn in places. I didn't see anything for sale but there was an Auchan Supermarket 10 minutes walk away. Parking is plentiful but public transport links are variable.
