WINCANTON TOWN FC - A BRIEF HISTORY

The club was established in 1890, and originally played at Dancing Lane on West Hill. They played most of their football in the Yeovil and District League in the early years. They won the Division 2 title in 1989 and went on to lift the Division 1 title in the two seasons that followed. After finishing as runners-up in 2003, Wincanton Town moved up to Division 3 of the Somerset League, having moved to an improved ground at Moor Lane during the previous decade. They were runners-up to Frome Collegians in their first season and were promoted to Division 2. They switched to the Dorset Football League in 2006, winning its Senior Division in their only season in the league. Promotion to the Dorset Premier Football League followed, and six seasons were spent there. In 2013, Wincanton finished as runners-up to Portland United and won promotion to the Western League Division 1. They were unsuccessful in the playoffs in 2022, 2023 and 2024. However, on the latter occasion, they were promoted on PPG when a space became available higher up the pyramid. Last season, they played in the Wessex Premier, finishing in 15th place.

The club's best-ever FA Cup run came in 2022 when they beat Tadley Calleva and Camberley Town before losing 9-2 to AFC Totton in the 1st Qualifying Round. The FA Vase has seen them have a terrible record, winning only one tie in eleven seasons, which came in 2017 when they won 2-1 at Bridport. This season, a remarkable 5-5 draw at Cowes Sports before the Isle of Wight side won on penalties. Local cup honours include the Somerset Senior Cup in 2013, the Dorset Premier Football League Supplementary Cup in 2009 and the Yeovil and District League John Haywood Cup in 2001. The town of Wincanton is located in Somerset, just off the A303. It has a population of around 6,500. The town gives its name to Wincanton Racecourse, which is in the neighbouring parish of Charlton Musgrove.

MY VISIT

Wincanton was only one of a few grounds that I was able to get to on a midweek, with Mendip Broadwalk, New Milton and Stapleford Town the only others that worked with a 3.50 am alarm. Most had proved elusive so far, so I was glad when this was scheduled. I had been to this ground previously for photos, and it looked pretty decent. It was also under consideration last Easter as a precursor to the South West Hop. However, in that case, Sturminster Newton United won out as it was a longer trip. The weather looked to be causing no problems, although that would be a case of 'enjoy it while it lasts' with winter on its way.

I left my temporary apartment in Zagreb, hoping to have something to eat in the city before getting the bus to the airport. However, they were not that regular and even a supermarket saw the risk of having to wait nearly an hour for the next bus as the queues were huge. The same could be said for the bus, although at less than a quid to get there, the inconvenience was not so bad. The airport used similarly old-fashioned machines where you had to take stuff out of your bag for scanning, but at least it was quick. On the other side, the food prices were reasonable €13.30 got me a Brewmark Hot Basket, which consisted of chicken, sausage, cheese, fries and sauces. I wish I'd read the reviews before, as they were not good. But in the end, it turned out to be pretty decent, with the Croatian sausages being the highlight. I made my way through passport control, which was nice and quick, and overall, the airport experience had been decent. The British Airways boarding was slow and drawn out, though. As a result, we missed our slot and took off 45 minutes late. We made up time on the way back, but it took ages to get off due to people fannying about getting stuff out of the overhead lockers. I prefer Ryanair's more efficient 'charge for everything' approach as it makes getting off quicker.
I got a meal deal from WH Smith and got the 5.30 bus back to High Wycombe. It was hardly a happy homecoming. First, I missed the perfect connection home by seconds, then Wycombe got an absolute stinker of an FA Cup draw in Plymouth at home. I watched the draw when in Wycombe bus station, the delay in getting home was only 25 minutes.  It was nice to have my home comforts and to catch up with my Mum and have a rest. I had a good night's sleep, and the last day of my time off was upon me. It was my usual walk to town and back, with over ten miles covered. I spent the afternoon at home relaxing before leaving at 4. Colin was late due to a delayed bus, but we were soon on our way. It was a decent drive, but one that involved lots of small roads. We were in Wincanton at 6.35 and I headed to the Summer Palace Chinese. Knowing that these sorts of places are stuck in Amish times when it comes to accepting cards, I had bought cash. Colin was not prepared and so just went to the Co Op, where they had embraced the 21st century. I ordered the house special curry with chips for a reasonable £7.50. This was pretty decent and a decent portion. From there, it was five minutes to the ground, which was a strange setup in terms of actually getting in. Give me it over something uniform and flat pack any day, though. £8 got me entry and a decent programme.

Wincanton Town were not having a good season in the Wessex Premier, having yet to win and drawn four games, while losing eight so far. They were bottom of the league and had lost 1-0 to Cowes Sports on Saturday. Brislington were 16th in the Western Premier and had won five, drawn one and lost ten of their games. On Saturday, they won 3-1 at Helston Athletic. Wincanton had a good opening spell, a low shot just wide on 13 minutes. Typical of their luck though, Brislington had a good spell and scored with their first real chance, a good strike from 20 yards by Paulo Borges on 27 minutes. Wincanton soon got a deserved equaliser on 35 minutes from a tight angle wide on the right by Spencer Hanslip. They took the lead from a similar attack in first-half injury time, Hanslip with his and Wincanton's second. Brislington improved in the second half and had most of the play. The visitors had a goal disallowed for offside on 65 minutes. Wincanton had a good spell towards the end and made it 3-1, a smart run and finish by substitute Matt Garner. It was their first win of the season, but Wincanton's evening was slightly soured when they had a player sent off for a second booking deep in injury time.

THE GROUND - 2021

I first visited the Wincanton Sports Ground on Friday, 17th July 2021, as a way to break my journey down to Falmouth for a weekend away. I saw a pleasant, well-kept ground with a singular stand, thankfully a bricks and mortar one as opposed to a flat pack metal one. There was a decent amount of parking, but it was in the middle of nowhere with nothing around it.

GROUND UPDATE

Since my last visit, a new standing area had been added on the far side. This was basic but looked decent in the club colours. Aside from that, it was pretty much the same. The food and drink facilities were located in the building outside the ground. These consist of rolls, cakes, soft drinks, hot drinks and various cans of booze. Parking was quite tight due to the number of people there and a funfair being set up. It is around a mile or so from town.
