SLOVAN BRATISLAVA - A BRIEF HISTORY

ŠK Slovan Bratislava  play in the Slovak Super Liga. Founded as I. ČSŠK Bratislava in 1919, the club changed its name to Slovan Bratislava in 1953. Slovan is the most successful team in Slovakia with the most titles in both the league and cup in the country.

Slovan Bratislava became the first and so far only club in Slovakia as well as former Czechoslovakia to win one of the European cup competitions, the Cup Winners' Cup when they defeated FC Barcelona in the final in Basel in 1969. The club also supplied seven players to the victorious UEFA Euro 1976 Czechoslovakia.

As for the ground, it was only home to Slovan Bratislava for a temporary period from 2009 - 2018 whilst their stadium, Tehelne Pole, was rebuilt. Inter Bratislava were the first tenants, from 1962 until 2009 until financial issues forced them into ground shares at Dubravka and latterly Stupava. The Slovakian National team have also played games there. Additionally, Pertrzalka were tenants between 2008 & 2010 whilst their ground was rebuilt.

MY VISIT

For the second part of my trip away, I decided to head to a new country in Slovakia, more accurately Bratislava. Futbology was useful for planning these games, but a lot of things change. Originally, Slovan Bratislava had been listed as kicking off at 1 PM and I had planned to do Petrzalka for the early 10:30 kick-off. Firstly, the Slovan game was moved back to 10.30, that's if it ever was kicking off at 1 in the first place. I erred towards Petrzalka as it was a first-team game but then that was moved. So I went back to my original plan, but with the task of finding a middle game between this and the Slovakia-Bosnia game in the evening.
My alarm woke me up on the day of the game at 07:00. Having gone to sleep around midnight, I felt more tired than I should have but then I remembered that the clocks had gone forward during the night. I had a shower and got dressed before getting my things together. It was a short walk to the local station, a tram to near the main station and then another walk to Vienna Central. I bought my ticket on the Rail Europe app to save time and it came out at an impressive £9.50. It was a bit clunky having a PDF rather than a mobile ticket but it was all accepted by the inspector.
My train, which left at 08:17 was a Slovak one, it lacked the creature comforts such as USB charging and tables but it was clean, comfortable and not too crowded. We got to Bratislava slightly late but I still wanted to drop my bag off. The Hyde Park Hostel was my accommodation for the night, it was clean and convenient and had a friendly owner. Also good value at 32 Euros. He was also very talkative which held me up and that combined with a couple of false leads on Google Maps meant that I was running late. I eventually found the correct one. My 4 tram took me to right near the ground, or at least 5 minutes walk away.

Entry was a bargain 3 Euros. The game was around 15 minutes in when I arrived, Soccerway informing me that I'd missed no goals. Slovan dominated but they lacked bite up front. They eventually opened the scoring on  68 minutes from a good run down the left and a finish. This fired them up a bit and they forced the visiting keeper into a good save on 71 minutes before extending their lead a minute later, netting from a rebound. Seven minutes from time, Myjava pulled a goal back, getting on the end of a cross from close range. This led to a late rally and they got their equaliser in injury time, another cross from the right and a finish from six yards to make it 2-2.

THE GROUND

STADION PASIENKY is a classic old ground. It is looking a little tired in places but that just adds to the charm. Like quite a lot of European grounds, it has a running track although from the side at least, the view is quite decent. Nothing was open food or drink wise for my game but there is a shopping centre nearby.
